Batangas Province Dental Chapter (BPDC) and Philippine College of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (PCOMS), in partnership with St. Frances Cabrini Medical Center (SFCMC), hosted the Joint Scientific Seminar held at SFCMC Social Hall, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, Aug.29, 9AM.
Dr. Florentino Afable, Head of Business Operations and Hospital Services, gave an overview and provided points to level off the expectations of the participants. “This activity is very important. We will give you quality speakers and we will give you the proper knowledge,” he said.
Various lecture presentations and workshops were also given and facilitated by reputable speakers.
Dr. Joy Bautista discussed a lecture about the Review of Radiographic Interpretation. On the other hand, the discourse on Key Point in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Repair was given and facilitated by Dr. Noryoshi Sumiya. While Dr. Patrick N. Magalit focused on his lecture regarding Tuberculosis in Dental Practice.
For the closing remarks, Dr. John Cresencio F. Alonzo, President and COO of SFCMC, gave his utmost gratitude to BPDC and PCOMS.
The seminar was attended by 150 professional dentists from Batangas.
Brachytherapy is an advanced cancer treatment technique where, using an HDR after loader, radioactive seeds or radiation sources are inserted near or inside the tumor itself via strategically positioned catheters, giving a high radiation dose to the malignant tumor while reducing the risk of radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues. HDR Brachytherapy can provide highly precise treatment in minutes. The catheters are eventually removed after a series of treatment sessions, and there are no radioactive seeds left in the body.
As the premier cancer management and care center in the region, St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute Radiotherapy Department is equipped with a new HDR Brachytherapy Treatment Planning System by Elekta.
With the upgrade, St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute Radiotherapy Department is proud to offer our patients the gold standard in Brachytherapy system, capable of Image-Guided Brachytherapy. The rising trend now is 3D planning where the treatment plan is based on 3D images, i.e. CT/MRI images, providing clinicians greater degree of control in placement and significant refinement in dose delivery.
HDR Brachytherapy technique may be applied to treat various cancers, such as:
Gynecologic (Cervical/Uterine) cancers
Head and neck cancers
As part of the preparations prior to operation of the upgraded HDR Brachytherapy unit, Dr. Malen M. Gellido, Surgical Oncologist and Cancer Institute Director of the St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute, and Dr. Jose Roel E. Resubal, Radiation Oncologist, both completed the Brachy Academy “Masterclass: Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI)” held from October 8 up to 9, 2015 hosted at NUH Medical Centre, National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore, while Ms. Mary Grace T. Ceballos, Sr. Medical Physicist of the RadioTherapy Department, also trained in the field of Brachytherapy.
With one (1) HDR after loader(Iridium 192 source) for Brachytherapy, two(2) linear accelerators for External Beam Radiotherapy (2D Conventional, 3D Conformal, intensity-modulated or IMRT, image-guided or IGRT/VMAT techniques), and one (1) dedicated CT machine for Scanning and Treatment Planning, St. Cabrini Cancer Institute Radiotherapy Department is able to expand its radiation oncology services for patients with cancer in CALABARZON region and neighboring provinces. In addition to DOH, the radiotherapy facility is being regulated and accredited by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI).
St. Cabrini Cancer Institute offers the full range for cancer education & support, cancer screening and cancer treatment services, with multidisciplinary team approach to cancer management. For more information, please visit www.cabrinimed.com.ph, or write to email@example.com.
St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute, the leader in radiation oncology services in the Philippines, can better serve patients with cancer using top-of-the-line Elekta Synergy upgraded with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), the first of its kind in the country.
After unveiling the 2nd unit linear accelerator (an Elekta Compact) in July 2015, St. Cabrini Cancer Institute has revamped the 1st unit Elekta Synergy linear accelerator to enable the new Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IMRT) rotational technique, VMAT,developed by Elekta, which is currently the gold standard in radiation therapy.
“VMAT is an advanced radiation therapy technique that delivers high radiation doses precisely to the tumor target while reducing dose to the surrounding tissue and organs. Using single or multiple radiation beams that sweep in uninterrupted arcs around the patient, it enables treatment times to be reduced dramatically.” (source: Elekta.com)
With VMAT capability on the revamped linear accelerator, clinicians will have greater control, conformance, flexibilityand speed compared to conventional delivery and helical tomotherapy. VMAT beam-on-time is typically less than 2 minutes, thus over-all treatment time including patient positioningis less than 10 minutes, compared to Tomotherapy which is typically from 20 up to 40 minutes.
Elekta VMAT plus Monaco 5 Treatment Planning System with its Monte Carlo dose calculation algorithm – the gold standard in dose calculation - gives the best and most precise dose delivery in the industry. The benefits of VMAT are:
1) Deliver higher radiation to target cancer tissues, balanced with reducedexposure and risk to surrounding healthy tissues and organs (tissue-sparing).
2) Optimize target dose delivery; allowing for greater personalized treatment for individual patients and different pathologies.
3) Reduce overall treatment time significantly, thereby reduce risk of patient movement.
4) Increase number of patients treated on a per hour and per day basis for the radiotherapy center, further reduce patient waiting lists.
On January 6 and 7, 2016,Dr. Vicente Francisco R. Hizon, FPCR FPORS, Chief Section of Radiation Oncology of St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute, and Ms. Celia Amour B. Pataray, MMP, Medical Physicist both underwent ElektaVolumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) Training hosted by the Gleneagles™ Penang, Malaysia. After his training experience, Dr. Hizon mentioned that he was thoroughly impressed by the shortened time the patient would spend on the treatment table using the VMAT technique.
Presently, with its complement of two (2) linear accelerators, another first in the CALABARZON, and one (1) dedicated CT machine for Scanning and Treatment Planning, St. Cabrini Cancer InstituteRadiotherapy Department is able to expand its radiation oncology services with 2D Conventional, 3D Conformal, intensity-modulated (IMRT), image-guided IGRT/VMAT (external beam) modalities for patients with cancer in CALABARZON region and neighboring provinces.
Located in PEZA Special Economic Zone, St.Frances Cabrini Cancer Institute is approved to accept patients with Breast Cancer under PhilHealthZ-Benefit Package. In the effort to make state-of-the-art radiotherapy more widely accessible, the Radiotherapy Department has dedicated staff who can facilitate and assist patients navigate the lengthy process to avail Philhealth outpatient benefits, as well as PCSOindividual medical health assistance or LGU financial assistance for medical/health.
